As you may have seen in our previous blog post “Pre-sale preparation delivers maximum results”, de-cluttering your house and removing unnecessary personal items is a vital component of preparing for sale.
Most homes have overflowing and congested storage areas and rooms filled with too much furniture.
By de-cluttering you can reclaim that space, its free (it just takes time and elbow grease) yet a lot of sellers don’t put enough effort into it!
Zoe Brooks, from Order in the House shares her tips on packing-up after the sale which also assist with the task of de-cluttering.
Getting rid of household items that you no longer require is best done prior to selling – there is little point in carting items to your new home that you are unlikely to need or use again.
A day or two before the move, place a plastic storage box with a lid in each bedroom and put in it what you will need over the next day or two (this will clearly separate it from the packing boxes). For example, school uniforms, footy boots, medicines, phone chargers, clothing, pyjamas. This will make packing easy as everything other than what is in the box, will be packed up. The same can apply in the kitchen for last minute items that you will need right up until the move begins.
Have a good supply of zip lock bags – these are very useful when packing up small bits and pieces that you want to keep together.
The configuration of your new home is unlikely to be the same as your current home. When marking boxes, mark them based on where they will live in the new home. It can be confusing for removalists if the boxes are marked “study” when the new home doesn’t necessarily have a study.
Setting up your new home.
Mark each room at your new home clearly with a sign on the door eg. “MIA’S ROOM”. This makes unpacking much easier if boxes are placed in the allocated room.
Have a clean set of sheets for each bed organised prior to the move and labelled accordingly. Ideally if these can be placed in the correct room, when the un-pack begins, the beds can all be made up with fresh linen.
As the kitchen is generally the first room to be unpacked, ensure your removalists pack the kitchen boxes last on the truck. This way, they will be first off at the other end and ready to unpack straight away.
Moving is a big change for everyone in the family but let us not forget about our four legged friends. Ensure that you have their bedding, food and water bowls packed up and clearly marked so that when you arrive at the new house, they are sorted out too.
